Estimated taxes

Estimated taxes are quarterly payments of income and self-employment tax required from taxpayers whose income is not subject to withholding, including traders, business owners, and anyone with large crypto gains.

Payments are due in April, June, September, and January. The safe harbor: pay at least 100 percent of last year’s tax (110 percent for higher incomes) or 90 percent of the current year’s, and no underpayment penalty applies.

Why it matters: a large gain in one quarter can create an underpayment penalty even if the full tax is paid by April.
