Practice areas | Tax controversy

IRS audits, tax litigation, and white collar investigations, handled by tax litigators.

Notices have deadlines, and every statement to an examiner is on the record. Our attorneys take over the communication, protect what you tell us under attorney-client privilege, and work the case to the outcome the facts support. Most matters start with one conversation.

Why Gordon Law

Answers from an attorney, not a sales representative.

Some tax resolution companies sell fear and a program you may not qualify for. We tell you what the IRS will actually accept before you pay anyone anything, and if your situation does not need a lawyer, we say so.

The firm was founded in 2012 by a tax attorney and CPA who began his career at the IRS. Audits, collections, appeals, and Tax Court are a daily practice here, with attorneys and accountants under one roof so the return, the records, and the defense come from the same team.

Results depend on the facts of each matter and are not a prediction of the outcome in your case.

Before you amend a return, watch this.

Questions people ask before they call

Straight answers to the questions that come up first. The consultation is where we answer the rest.

When the matter is a dispute rather than a return: an audit, a notice proposing tax, a balance you cannot pay, unreported income or foreign accounts, or anything with possible criminal exposure. Conversations with an attorney are protected by attorney-client privilege; conversations with an accountant generally are not, and an accountant can be compelled to testify. At Gordon Law you do not have to choose, because the attorneys and the accountants work as one team.

No. Federal tax matters do not require a local attorney, and the firm represents clients in all 50 states and abroad. The office is in Skokie, outside Chicago; most client relationships are handled by phone and video.

It depends on the matter. Responding to a notice is a different engagement from a multi-year audit or a Tax Court case. In the consultation the attorney explains the options, what each is likely to involve, and how it is priced, so you can decide with the numbers in front of you. Consultations are confidential and carry no obligation.

Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people call. Unfiled years are usually less expensive to fix than people expect, and filing before the IRS prepares a substitute return for you almost always produces a lower balance.

A bank levy holds funds for 21 days before the bank sends them, and a wage levy continues each pay period until released. Both can be released by putting a resolution in place, and we treat an active levy as the first priority in the matter.

Fees related to a business or to the production of income may be deductible as a business expense; personal legal fees generally are not. We will tell you which applies to your engagement.
