IRS transcript

An IRS transcript is the agency's record of your account, return, wage and income reporting, or record of account, available online or through a representative with Form 8821 or 2848.

The wage and income transcript shows every third-party form the IRS received, including 1099-DA and 1099-MISC, which is the first thing to pull before responding to a notice or preparing late returns. The account transcript shows assessments, payments, penalties, and the collection statute.

Why it matters: transcripts tell you what the IRS already knows before you tell it anything.
