Travel Rule

The Travel Rule requires financial institutions, including registered crypto money services businesses, to collect and pass along sender and recipient information for transfers above a threshold, so the data travels with the funds.

How it works

In the United States it applies to transfers of 3,000 dollars or more between institutions; FinCEN has proposed lowering it for crypto. Exchanges implement it by sharing customer data with each other.

Why it matters

It is one more channel through which exchange customers are identified, and it is why some exchanges require the destination wallet’s ownership to be declared. Bank Secrecy Act.
