Form 1099-B

Form 1099-B is the broker statement reporting proceeds from sales of stocks, bonds, and other securities, and until Form 1099-DA took over in 2025, some crypto exchanges used it to report digital asset sales.

How it works

Brokers report proceeds from sales of stocks, bonds, options, and other securities on Form 1099-B, with cost basis for covered securities. Before Form 1099-DA took over for 2025 transactions, some crypto exchanges used the 1099-B to report digital asset sales, often without basis, and others reported nothing.

Why it matters

If you received a 1099-B for crypto in a prior year, the IRS has that number and expects to see it on Schedule D. Old 1099-Bs with gross proceeds and no basis are behind many CP2000 notices.
