Form 9465

Form 9465 is the installment agreement request, used to ask the IRS for a monthly payment plan on a tax balance when you cannot pay in full.

How it works

Form 9465 requests an installment agreement on a tax balance. Individuals owing 50,000 dollars or less in combined tax, penalties, and interest can usually qualify for a streamlined plan of up to 72 months without a financial statement, and can apply online instead. Larger balances require Form 433-F or 433-A. Setup fees apply and are reduced for direct debit and low-income applicants.

Why it matters

Requesting a plan before a final notice preserves options and generally stops levy action while the request is pending.
